Cereal stereotyping

One way to juggle the school/work/family is by multitasking. Drop off one child at an extracurricular activity, drag the other one along grocery shopping, for instance. This is a focused trip; no time to stroll through the aisles looking for a new type of tapenade.

But the cereal aisle gets me every time. It's a case study in micromarketing. You're male, 40, fit, and climbing your way to the top, baby. Here. Pick up your power pellets. A little heavy around the middle and too busy to exercise? Try some dried berry, yoghurt-studded flakes.

Really, there's a cereal built to suit.

Which got me thinking.

Have we focused so much on the micromarket that we've started to define ourselves by the cereal we eat? Could micromarketing be behind generational segmenting?
